Use cases
wamo is aimed at businesses too small or too new for a traditional business bank account, which is most creators and most first products.
Common reasons to open one:
- Getting paid: an IBAN in your company's name so sponsors, brands and clients can pay by transfer rather than to a personal account.
- Paying for the stack: a virtual card per subscription, so API credit, hosting and ad spend are separated from everything else.
- Working in more than one currency: charging in euros and paying suppliers in another, without a conversion fee hidden in the rate.
- Selling in person: the wamo POS reader for a workshop, a stand at an event or anything sold face to face.
- Keeping it tidy: accounts, cards and POS in one dashboard, so the year-end is a download rather than an archaeology project.
For anyone shipping a small software product, the free tier is enough to take the first payments and see whether the thing works before committing to a monthly fee. Upgrading is what happens when the transfer volume, the card count or the POS turnover outgrows the free allowance, not something you have to decide on day one.

Suitability
wamo supports registered businesses in the European Economic Area and the UK, including limited companies, sole traders and freelancers. UK sole traders are the one exception and cannot open an account.
That makes it a fit for creators who have registered a company, small agencies, educators selling courses, introducing brokers taking commission, and early-stage teams who need an account before they need a finance function. It is not a fit for a licensed broker or an exchange: an EMI account is for operating money, not for holding client funds.

FAQ
Is wamo a bank?
No. wamo Solutions Oy is an electronic money institution authorised and regulated by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN-FSA), registration number 3368055-9. That licence lets it issue accounts, IBANs and cards across the EEA, but client money is safeguarded at a partner credit institution rather than covered by a deposit guarantee scheme. Treat it as an operating account, not a place to park reserves.
Who can open a wamo account?
Registered businesses in the European Economic Area and the UK, including limited companies, public limited companies, sole traders and freelancers. UK-based sole traders are excluded. Signup is fully online and wamo quotes minutes rather than days, though onboarding checks still apply.
Is the free plan actually usable?
Yes, within limits. Freemium has no monthly fee and no setup fee, and comes with an EU IBAN plus one physical and one virtual Visa card, so you can be invoiced and you can spend. What you give up is the free transfer allowance (outgoing local transfers cost €0.99 instead of €0.49) and the commission-free POS volume the paid plans include. For a first product or a creator's first sponsorship payments, that is usually enough.
Which countries does wamo issue local IBANs in?
Every plan comes with an EU IBAN. Local IBANs are available in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, the UK and Finland, which matters when a client or a platform will only pay to a domestic account number.
What does wamo POS do?
wamo POS is a card reader for taking payments in person, tied to the same account as your IBAN and cards. Each paid plan includes a monthly volume you can take commission-free (€5,000 on Start, €15,000 on Grow, €20,000 on Scale), with transaction fees beyond that. It is useful if you sell at events or run workshops alongside whatever you do online.
